What's the best way to take my boots off?

Never take boots off using the toe of one boot against the heel of another. This will break down the back of the heel and shorten its life. Instead, place your ankle on the knee of your other leg and pull off the boot by grasping it at the heel and toe. Using a BOOT JACK is also an easy method of removing your boots.

How should I care for my new boots?

Cleaning and conditioning your boots on a regular basis will extend the life of your leather. Start by removing the dust and dirt by using a soft brush or a damp cloth. Do this as often as needed. We recommend following this with a thin coat of a quality leather conditioner every 1-2 months. Conditioning your leather will keep it soft and supple and help to prevent drying and cracking. In our stores, we carry the JB Dillon Leather Enhancement Cream. On certain types of leathers, such as distressed or oil tanned, conditioners can darken the color. We suggest testing a small hidden area of the boot and letting the conditioner dry, before applying to the entire boot.

For smooth leather boots, if you like your boots to have a bit of a shine, after conditioning you can apply a thin coat of cream polish in a matching color. Then, buff off.

What size boot should I buy?

Every pair of boots will fit slightly different. When trying on boots, we suggest starting with the size you wear in a majority of your other shoes. You may need to move up or down in size depending on how the boots fit.

How do I know if my boots fit correctly?

There are a few main things to look for in a properly fitting boot.

When first putting the boots on, you should feel a slight resistance on the arch of your foot. Hold the pull tabs and pull up on the boot as you push your foot in. You should feel a slight pop as your foot goes down into the foot of the boot.

The boot should fit snug across the instep of your foot, but not too tight. This area will stretch and form to your foot.

Your toes should fit flat and comfortable inside the boot, with a little room to wiggle. They should not feel pinched or crammed at all. The toe box area of a boot will not stretch, so make sure your toes are comfortable.

The ball of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot. This will also help ensure that your toes are in the correct placement.

When you take a step, your heel should slip up about 1/4 inch off the bottom of the boot. As your boots break in, this slippage will become less noticeable.
